This is the final book design in PDF format.

Since finishing this job, Duncan Mara has been in touch with a few publishers to see about them publishing his book but so far it remains unpublished.

Duncan Mara, Professor at Leeds University contacted Leeds College of Art to ask for the help of an illustrator for his first children's book (he has other genres of work published). He asked for a sample illustration (kind of like Mr Men with the bold colours and the outlines) and provided him with the image below. He liked the image and went on to meet up with me to brief the rest of the project and to discuss pricing.

After meeting up I got the manuscript for the childrens book and discussed the price that I was to be paid.

Here is my progress so far, I think that I need to add in some sort of intro to the animation before the cello starts playing and after the zoom into the paper. This would direct the audience into the animation with a clear understanding on what its about or what its based on.

I feel i also need to figure out a good way of changing the transition from 0:15-0:17 seconds as it doesn't give the smooth transitional/metamorphosis effect that I am trying to achieve.

Little things like this is what stops my animation from looking professional and its what keeps it looking 'ok' and not 'good'.

Animation progress

Progress from Olivia Newsome on Vimeo.

I have made a good amount of progress over the past few weeks on my animation. My animation is starting to come together well.  There are a few things that I need to fix in terms of timing so that my animation looks professional however I will concentrate on that once I have animated the bulk of my plans.

Animation peer review

The feedback that I received allowed me to make some decisions on my animation. It helped me to clarify a lot of my thinking by speaking to other people. These are the decisions that I made as a result:

Type: Documentary
Name: The Craftsman
Authors name: Richard Sennett
Date: 1 January (his birthday) BBC1 7pm

-Hand drawn type will suit the beginning and end of the animation. It will add to the 'craft' aesthetic.
-All titles and drawing will be designed to be within a certain box/constraint so that when watched on different sized televisions, the main information will still be able to be read.
-The animation will be predominantly black line work. It will suit the hand drawn type and will contrast well against the background. It also helps save time on colouring and colour selection.

Oliver Jeffers uses hand drawn type in his work- it works so so well when it is done in stop frame. This tone of voice will suit my plans for my animation.
