Project Proposal

-->
What are you proposing to do? (Product, Range & Distribution)

My project will be a task of designing soft drink bottle labels for Leeds Brewery's new soft drink range. I will consider current packaging for leeds brewery, the atmosphere of leeds itself and also current and innovative existing drinks bottle labels. My research will inform these decisions.

I will create the bottle label designs for 3 new products. A ginger beer, a root beer and a dandelion and burdock soft drink. To advertise this I will also create the packaging and promotional material; including a map of Leeds of where you can purchase these drinks from.
I will design the labels and packaging to carry 6 bottles and also create a map of leeds as part of the mini campaign that I am creating. This map will be on one side of a hot dog fold book on the other side will be different places that you can buy this special drink around leeds's food and drink places. I will create the bottle labels using limited colour palettes and design it using spot colour channels.

What do you want achieve?
I want to create some really nice designs for Leeds Brewery that represent their brand well and push the theme of Leeds heritage. The designs should reference Leeds in some way.

I want to create something really strong that catches your attention and is also a credible design for Leeds Brewery.

What do you want learn from doing it?
I want to use design to help my illustrations.  I want to expand my work from being simple prints to something that exists on a product and its packaging.
I want to learn how to apply my designs and illustrations more practically.
I want to understand design and text better.
I want to learn more about maps and binding techniques.

THEMES / SUBJECTS
What Themes/Subjects will form the content of your work for this module? This should include Theoretical and non- creative based content and concerns. This section should identify your consideration of the social, cultural, ethical and creative concerns of contemporary practice

Food and drink
Love your city

SPECIFIC SUBJECTS:
Leeds
Leeds Brewery
Special soft drinks
Maps
Dandelion and burdock

PRACTICAL & CONCEPTUAL APPLICATION
What areas of Illustration do you intend to investigate in relation to the practical and conceptual, production / distribution of work in response to selected briefs.

People who drink soft drinks

PRODUCTION / Distribution Methods:
The product will either be produced digitally or screenprinted. In industry the design would most likely be printed using spot colours digitally so this may be the route to look at.

Map drawing

I did some drawings for the map that I want to include. I have tried out lots of different approaches. I really like the 3d ones that I have drawn but i feel to draw the whole of leeds like this would be too difficult and way too time consuming.

Trying out different ways of showing colour.

Here I am experimenting with showing different types of buildings in different colours. I have tried using black with the 'pop' of colour too and then tried just different tones of the same colour. I feel that the tones of the same colour work better as they contrast more against the background buildings.

I will see what my collab partner things and then go from there.

research

I did some research into bottles and maps. I looked at a book in a library that detailed what certain colours do in bottle design, what each colour represents and its appetite rating. This is really interesting as it will help me in the choosing of the colours for the bottles. It seems oranges, reds, black and white work well on bottles.

I also looked at some maps. I found these maps in varoom, an art shop and in the library. They are great! I really love them, i love the vibrant colours and the graphic style. I hope that I have enough time to spend on these maps and create something really exciting.
Project proposal evaluation:

Consideration of audience- Leeds Brewery, people of Leeds and people who like fancy soft drinks)

Wrote in proposal "I need to consider the application of illustration in particular packaging design and how to print onto certain materials"

It will enhance the culture of Leeds and its sense of community.
Environmental concerns about the packaging

Practical approach- making bottle labels and a map
Conceptually- enhancing the community and culture in Leeds

I will try

Research has enlightened me to where I need to direct my efforts. I know where and how I need to focus my time by planning and from prior experience and by using time plans posted to my blog.

Ideas for project

I have come up with a few ideas of how i want the product to look like. It is still early stages so it is open to change but it was good to just get my thoughts onto paper.

basic ideas

I have come up with some ideas for the bottle label by drawing out cities in leeds. I really don't like the designs. The colours are weird and the bold black lines are making it look dated. I must abandon this idea and revamp my design somehow.

Creative Concerns
I want to make sure that what i design is actually good

I need to consider application of illustration in particular packaging design and how to print onto certain materials.

colour channels

channels palette- a way to work with spot colour

overprinting

when 1 channel overlaps another- good to create a 3rd colour- simulates multiply layer style

solidatary
black is usually the last ink to be printed

tint creates a shade of colour. eg lighter pink here

save as a photoshop format or TIFF file so that you can save the spot colours

in illustrator the reference number travels with the tiff or photshop file so that its is accurately reproducable

SEPARATIONS

150lines per inch typical printing

moire patterns happen if dots aren't rotated properly by the printer

screenprinting no more than 65 LPI. 20 for visible dots. 50 is good average
angles for screenprint 15for first ink, 75 for magenta, 105 yellow, 155 black.

if there are no tints dont change the frequency or the angle.

CMYK

delete unused swatches

use list view instead of thumbnail view-more info

use registration colour for only registration marks- it looks black but its not!

global swatch
no need to select- automaticallly updates

spot colour
spot colour is created before it is printed instead of layering colours. It is printed using its own ink.
if CMYK cant print it - spot colour is used
you would use this for:
economic or financial reasons- fewer inks- cheaper process
accuracy of reproduction of colour

open swatch library> colour books> metalic/neon etc

coated referes to the type of paper and the absorbancy - colour is mized slightly differently

if you are using pantone keep the reference number the same

Leeds Brewery Research

These are the existing products of Leeds brewery and underneath are the places that their beer is stocked. I want to keep my product in line with the existing designs but also create something new, innovative and eye catching. Especially something that will stand out against existing brands.
