updated proposal

What are you proposing to do? (Product, Range & Distribution)

My project will be to create 5 books focusing around independent industries in Leeds.

There are 5 main independent industries in leeds- drink, fashion & lifestyle, food, music and art & design. I will then create and apply text to 6 drawings for each of these categories. The drawing will be of certain independent places in that category that stand out. My research will inform these decisions.

I will create the books using a limited colour palette and design it using spot colour channels.

What do you want achieve?
I want to create something that celebrates all things independent in Leeds. I also want it to be something that could actually be used and applied in Leeds. I want to be able to go into an independent shop that I look at and sell them some books or a print.

What do you want learn from doing it?
I want to use design to help my illustrations. I want to expand my work from being simple prints to something that exists on a product.
I want to learn how to apply my designs and illustrations more practically.
I want to understand design and text better.
I want to learn more about maps and binding techniques.

Negotiables and non negotiable-

My original plan was to base this whole idea around a bottle design. However as I progressed and developed my designs more and more, it became apparent that the basis of this project entered around 'independent leeds'.

Therefore I have now decided to cut the bottle and focus on the product being a book/publication now instead. This fits the purpose much more and cuts out a lot of extra work for not much of an advantage.

Evaluation

The module has brought me into something so much bigger than the brief's that were just made for this course. It has expanded my scope and my thinking to something much more industry based than before. The module has been tricky in terms of the briefs were quite specific in some cases (Save The Children) it was much more than the briefs on the course, however some briefs were so open that you had to create your own mini brief within it to help you form a direction.

The collaborative brief was another enjoyable one. Two heads were definitely better than one in this case as we produced an idea that I feel we were both proud of. Thankfully there was no falling outs during this brief. I feel that this is because we are both quite easy going, our 'style' compliments each others and we decided on the direction very early on so that our vision for the solution was very clear. We also gave each other jobs so that we weren't 'stepping on each others toes' however for the final boards we did sit down and decide the text and layout together.

The individual briefs were a mixture of emotions! Some of the briefs were quite easy going and were very enjoyable, others began easily but soon opened up into a plethora of problems. One of my favourite briefs was the Tiger Print- Make Your Mark brief. It was great to just have fun trying out different techniques of mark making, using different brushes and also using photoshop to keep a clean, professional look.

Probably my least favourite brief was the 'Owen Goes To Australia' children's book. This was because I was illustrating it in a certain way that I wouldn't work normally and I didn't really like the tone of voice that came across with it. It also proved a massive pain as there was lots of changes and even complete redesigns that happened without extra pay. Moral of the story- make a contract and make it clear that changes cost extra!

I have definitely developed my skills over the course of this module; it has taught me how to present work to a professional standard. It has developed my skills in layout and type so that I can display my work in the best way. I’ve also grown in knowledge on mocking up products and the power in suggesting to make something instead of actually making it. I have also developed skills in collaboration work and how to manage a project together. Another skill that I have developed is dealing with clients as a few of my briefs had people directly telling me how they wanted it and even telling me what to change so that it fitted the outcome that they envisioned.

Many of the briefs that I tackled did not include enough research, sometimes I didn't read the brief properly, other times I did not develop my ideas enough. If i were to do this module again I would of done at least 2 pages of sketches for each brief and also scrutinised every piece of information in project packs and briefs so I didn't get it wrong at times.

This module has been really fun yet challenging as each brief proved so very different! Each brief threw different aims, deliverables, constraints and limitations. Because of the sheer amount of briefs that I undertook and was asked to do, I feel the quality in some briefs may of dropped slightly. This is expected; maybe I should of undertook less briefs and concentrated on the existing ones more.

Tiger Print- Response

Here i have created a pattern for the Tiger Print 'Make Your Mark' brief. This would be a pattern for their gift wrap.

I have only once made a pattern before so it was really fun to step out again and try something that I am unfamiliar with. Im pleased with the contrasting colours here and the gradients used. I like the mix of colours and feel that it is a pattern that could be used quite widely across a range of occasions.

development

These are all the pieces that I have done for the books to go in the bottles so far. It is taking quite a while, especially with other modules needing attention.

Secret 7

Here are my submissions to the Secret 7 Brief. I tried to keep the theme quite simple in my submissions due to the time scale that was available to me. Each of my submissions related to the themes or imagery generated by listening to specific songs. I am not that pleased with them as i feel my illustrations are probably quite crude. I wish that I could of spent more time generating imagery in the early stages to achieve a really strong concept for the image.

Through these tears that I'm crying

Oh, I'm all alone now
No love to shield me
Trapped in a world
That's a distorted reality

Tiger Print

Tiger Print

This month's competition is all about making your mark!
We want you to explore the very fun yet messy realm of mark making - using a variety of tools and techniques. We want you to have fun and build up a collection of wonderful patterns which could be used across a range of our wrap products including gift bags, wrapping paper and tags.
Feel free to explore different techniques and mediums, and even make your own tools to draw with. Think about how different lines and mark making can be applied to create wonderful patterns. Experiment with colour - take a look at Spring/Summer 2016 trends but also consider how impactful monochrome can be or play with pops of colour to show us a fresh and exciting take on the trend. Look out for inspirational posts on our blog in the coming weeks.
To confirm, we are looking for surface pattern design swatches - don’t worry about fitting your patterns to specific products - we are solely looking at patterns! However do still think about how your pattern would transfer and consider playing with scale, placement and line weight etc.
Be Commercial
As always, we’d like you to keep the Marks and Spencer customer in mind. Your design must have a commercial feel that will appeal to either our male or female customer/recipient. Get familiar with the designs we already offer at M&S by popping in to your local store, or go online and check out our everyday range of wraps and gift bags that are on display.
Prize
The winner will receive £200.
Image Size
Images must be 500px x 500px or 500px x 700px, jpeg at 72 dpi.
Each entrant may submit a maximum of 5 designs each.
Please submit entries from Tuesday 24th March 2015 until Monday 20th April 2015 (Midnight GMT) using the 'Enter Now' button below.
Don’t forget to retain your original artwork at a resolution of at least 300 DPI, in case your design is selected as the winner.
