OUIL403 Evaluation

What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
I have developed a wide range of skills on this module, most notably my idea generation process has greatly progressed; this is a really good skill to have for the future when getting 'real' illustration jobs as I feel I have refined and sped it up. Other skills that I have developed are on Illustrator and Photoshop; these skills were applied quite effectively especially in the Photoshop brief and also in the final brief (Studio Brief 4) where I produce my final outcome solely on illustrator.

What approaches to methods of image making have you developed and how have they informed your concept development process?
Something that I learnt and that has changed the way I deal with briefs, is 'playing on' metaphors and producing ideas and concepts that take into account visual literacy and semiotics.

What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
I have become quite good at producing work using Wacoms and Photoshop, I have started to and will continue to look at other Illustrators who work using this process but who also keep the 'handmade' look as this is something I am particularly interested in.

What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?
A weakness that runs through my work quite a lot is that I come up with lots of ideas at the start of the brief and once I have found one that works really well, I generally go almost straight into producing the final piece and figure it out as I go along. This technique has its pros and cons; generally with a short brief in real life, you would solve the problem this way as you don't have time to do lots of testing and drawing and when you're finally sure on your idea, then you make the final outcome. However, at level 4 and for this module, testing, playing and thinking through drawing is probably the best approach to take.

Another weakness, that is also sort of linked to the previous weakness is that I generally do not try out different medias or techniques in my work. This is ok for the initial ideas but for my development of ideas, testing may play a crucial part in my own illustrative development and also the level of success in my final piece.

Identify 5 things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

1. Take more risks-
2. Create more ideas- a range of well thought out ideas will be much better and more useful than a small amount of ideas that are not that thought through nor developed.
3. Plan in advance- using my time effectively will mean that what I produce will be relevant and useful.
4. Use new medias- experimentation will take my work to another level and keep my approach and process from becoming stale.
5. Put in more effort- doing all of the above takes a good work ethic on my part, this will allow my work to progress a great deal.
