Leeds is currently making a Cultural Strategy, to guide culture in Leeds from 2017-2030.
The Culture Strategy website is here: http:// leedsculturestrategy.org/
That's the 'client' for this. Leanne Buchan is running it, and has asked us to commission some artists for a special issue of TCT to do 'something cool' that 1) creates awareness that the Culture Strategy is being developed 2) contributes to the Culture Strategy 3) is really good.
In the same period, the South Bank — south of the River Aire, from Holbeck to Hunslet — will be entirely redeveloped with new homes, offices, shops, leisure, schools, colleges and a new city park. The Council's South Bank page is here: http://southbankleeds. co.uk
We would like you to produce artwork for The City Talking newspaper that explores how a Cultural Strategy can guide the future development of the South Bank. One of the reasons for having a Cultural Strategy is to ensure developers will consider Leeds' culture as part of new developments.
What does culture mean to you, and what might it mean on the South Bank in the future?
Leanne Buchan of Leeds City Council is guiding the city towards its new Cultural Strategy, and has proposed five values that will guide the cultural course of the city that we would like you to consider in your work.
Bravery: how can the city be culturally confident? How can Leeds be radical, independent, ferocious?
Resilience: what creative riches can we rely on in Leeds, other than money?
Tolerance: how can we be proud, grateful and supportive of each other's creativity?
Generosity: how can we share resources, learning and opportunities?
Curiosity: trying and learning; how can we make sure excitement overcomes nerves?
====
Hopefully that makes enough sense to get you thinking good thoughts. The real basic version is:
1. think about those cultural strategy values
2. look at the South Bank area
3. do whatever you want
4. talk with me and Tone about it
Me and Shang-Ting will be on hand to help. The three other things to know are:
1. the deadline is tight! 8th April
2. we will be paying for your work — £xxx
3. the council are organising a launch event around the time the paper comes out, so that should be fun too
I hope this is of interest? Let me know if there are any questions, and if you're up for it!
Thanks,
Daniel."
This brief sounds really good, i will accept it and get started to work on it. It sounds a brief that is fairly open and less restricted, I am happy about this. I will email him back to accept it and check with size and format of the work/ other minor details.
